這是一首面臨死亡的人的遺囑詩，向他一生和自己分享歡樂悲傷的愛人朋友甚至情敵道別......

三個人，我們姑且稱他們為A、B、C。在50年代的法國鄉村，他們是同一所高中的同學。A和C是從小一起長大的、最要好的朋友，B是漂亮的女孩。通常在這種故事裡，我們很容易想像發生了什麼事情，A和C同時愛上了B。A是那種很陽光、很樂觀、很拉風的男孩，是學校的運動明星，是很多情竇初開的少女仰慕的對象。生活對於A來說充滿的只是快樂和單純。而C害羞、內斂，畫得一手好畫。早在A和B相愛之前，C已經默默的愛了B很久，但是沒有人知道。這份愛被藏在心底，直到畢業後A參軍、C成為一名木匠，直到戰後A返回家鄉和B結婚，直到婚後A找到工作當上一名貨車司機……

A經常離家工作很長時間，B打理著外婆留下的鄉村雜貨店，有太多的事情需要男人的幫忙，C就這樣擔負起了照顧年輕的母女的責任。天長日久，大家都想像得到的事情就那樣發生了。A樂觀的天性加上對妻子的愛、對摯友的信任使他對此茫然無知。直到一個大雪封路的冬天，A在出車的半夜折返家中，發現了一切……

面對驟然被生命中最重要的兩個人出賣這個難以接受的事實，A失去控制殺死了他們。當天深夜，A向警察局自首，兩個月後被判一級謀殺罪名成立，於第二年初春執行死刑。在死刑執行前的第三天，A在獄中寫了三段話，分別寫給他最好的朋友C、他的父親和他四歲的女兒。在即將離開人世的時刻，他仍然將C看作最好的、生命中最值得信賴的朋友。

這個A就是Jacques Brel，是一位法國歌手，於1961年創作，原曲名叫「LeMoribond」(將死之人)，譜寫的原因是他發現自己患了癌症，有感而發。

因為是臨終遺言，所以意境也就特別的美。

Pretty girls are everywhere ，Think of me and I ’ll be there

此句被認為是點睛之筆，頗具諷刺意味。

作者像是在描述天堂的美景，有好多的美女，有點出自己的花心。

然而，確實由衷地希望同樣的錯不要再犯一次，他和好友，不會再愛上同一個女人。

Michelle是他的女兒，因為他的死而將成為孤兒，讓他放心不下

I wish that we could both be there 指的是作者希望能返老還童，生命中能少些煩惱。

這首歌中反覆出現It’s hard to die ，其字面意思是：死去很難，但其實是由於對人世的留戀而使他不想離開。
